Japanese speakers may refer to this guide when giving a tour of the Izumo Taisha area to English speakers. The following questions are ones foreign visitors might ask at the sites.

Why is this shrine important? どうしてこの神社は大切なんですか。It is a national treasure. This building is the tallest and one of the oldest shrines in Japan; it was built in 1744 and is 24 metres (78 feet) tall. It was supposedly over 48 metres (157 feet) tall, 1000 years ago. It is dedicated to Ohkuninushi-no-Ohkami, the god of relationships, so people come here to pray for a good relationship. In the tenth month of the lunar calendar (usually in November), Shinto gods from all over Japan gather here. 国宝で、日本で一番高く、最も古い神社の一つなのです。1744年に建てられ、高さは24ｍです。千年前は４８メートルぐらいあったと考えられています。 縁結びの神である大国主大神が祀られており、人々は良縁を祈願に訪れます。旧暦の十月には、日本中からの神々がここにお集まりになります。 | |

What is this street with pine trees? この松林の道は何ですか。Originally, the middle of this street was only for the higher classes, but now anyone can use it. この道の中央はもともと身分の高い人しか通れませんでした。 The rows of 1000 pine trees were donated by the wife of the domain lord Tadauji Horio, between 1577 and 1604. 63 pine trees remain today. 千本の松が松江藩主堀尾忠氏（1577－1604）の夫人に寄進されましたが、今日は63本しか残っていません。 |

What is this? これは何ですか。This is the eight-columned gate in front of the inner shrine. It was built in 1667. You can usually only go as far as this gate to pray, but over New Year you can go through a little closer to the inner shrine.

What is this building? この建物は？This is Honden, the inner shrine. It is dedicated to Ohkuninushi-no-Ohkami. 本殿で、大国主大神が祀られています。 The original building is over 1000 years old, but this building was rebuilt in 1744. もとの神社は千年以上前に建てられましたが、今あるのは1744年に建てなおされたものです。 It is 24 metres (78 feet) tall and it is the tallest inner shrine in Japan. 24メートルで日本で一番高い本殿です。 |

What is Unta? 雲太って何ですか。Unta is the concept that Izumo Taisha was the tallest wooden structure in Japan over 1000 years ago. 千年以上前、出雲大社は日本で一番高い木造建築だったということです。 Most people had not believed this was possible, but in 2000, the remains of three huge pillars were found. Each pillar was about 3 metres (9.8 feet) in diameter, and it was made of 3 cedar trunks bound together with metal. They are believed to have supported the former inner shrine. 殆どの人が信じていませんでしたが、2000年に本殿を支えていたと思われる巨大な3本の柱が見つかりました。それぞれの柱は直径が約3メートルあり、金属で束ねた3本の杉の幹で作られていました。 |

What is this big rope? この大きい綱は？It's shime-nawa, a sacred rope. It marks a god's place. It's 13.5 metres (44.2 feet) long and weighs 6 tons (13,227 pounds). しめ縄で、結界です。長さは13.5メートルで重さは6トンです。 |

What is that island? あの島は？It's called Fumishima. Black-tailed gulls breed there from November to July. No one except the priest of Hinomisaki shrine is allowed to walk there. 経島で、11月から7月にかけて、ウミネコが繁殖するためにやってきます。日御碕神社の神主以外の人はこの島に行くことはできません。 |

What's special about this lighthouse? この灯台の特徴は何ですか。It's said to be the highest stone lighthouse in the Far East. Unlike some lighthouses, the public may enter. 東洋一高い石造りの灯台だと言われています。他の灯台とは違い、一般の人が灯台の中に入ることが出来ます。 How tall is it? 高さは？It's about 43.7 metres (133 feet) tall and 65 metres (213 feet) above sea level. 43.7メートルぐらいで、海面から65メートルの所にあります。 When was it built? いつ建てられましたか。In 1903. 1903年です。 |
